Turning Wheel Talks 2009—Twheet!
Examining Meditation in 21st Century America
Discover Joy and Peace Right Where You Are
Meditation helps us connect to the moment and discover peace with what’s really there. This event is intended to support and strengthen the meditation community in the Bay Area. Twheet is for folks who have been meditating for years and want to deepen their practice. Twheet is for those who have never tried meditating, but want to. Twheet is for the people who’ve dabbled in meditation and seek to establish a stronger habit and practice. It’s for “closet meditators” who wonder what else is out there. It’s for those who identify as Buddhists. It’s for those who don’t. It’s for anyone who wants to be part of the younger-adult community in the Bay Area! In other words, Twheet is for you. (Meet more Twheet fans on our Facebook page, where you can arrange a carpool, post comments and more!)
Our name has two meanings: 1) the event features a series of talks, and 2) the “turning wheel,” or evolving meditation community in America, will come together to discuss and share, joining and hearing voices. Twheet’s goal is to connect people and build community while helping individuals go deeper in their practice, regardless of where they’re starting out.
Twheet 2009 will be held November 14 at San Francisco’s Unitarian Universalist Church at 1187 Franklin Street. Twheet is a not-for-profit event. Attendees are welcome to come for all or part of the day. Attendance is on a donation basis, recommended $10-20, to help cover expenses and support teachers who have generously offered their time and wisdom to us. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
Our schedule is meant to serve you, the community. It features alternating teacher talks and a special “unconference” segment, where participants decide themselves what they’d like to discuss, share or try out.
Representatives from groups throughout the Bay Area are attending to meet other community members and plant seeds for future community projects and get-togethers.
Who We Are
Turning Wheel Talks is driven by a group of dedicated young practitioners and presented in conjunction with Berkeley-based Young Adult Dharma Council. We are very grateful for the support of many community members, including the generosity of SF Insight, the San Francisco Insight meditation community, Insight Meditation Center, Redwood City, Wat San Fran Dhammaram, San Francisco's Thai temple, and San Francisco Zen Center. We are also thankful for the generosity of Cafe Gratitude, Numi Tea, and the UU Church.
